ROMA

Neglected corners are a haven
from the great encroaching din,
in morning gardens groomed and tidied
for the guest.

To this neglected garden
the cat will come to yowl

Far beneath the ancient wall
are hidden rooms that love oblivion

We feel the fiery stare,
the dwelling glance,
the one we see at every turn

Presiding extemporaneous over all
dear Livia and her brooding seed
look down from high atop
the lush abiding Palatine
where Caesars dwell.
